Philando Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds and the city of Minnesota have finally reached a settlement, more than a year after Minnesota police shot and killed Castile in front of Reynolds and their 4-year-old daughter.
On Tuesday, St. Anthony City Council agreed to pay Reynolds $675,000. She will also receive $125,000 from League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust and the city of Roseville, where Reynolds was held by police for questions following the shooting.
Jerry Faust, St. Anthony’s mayor said the settlement “resolves any civil litigation against the city and current and former employees and opens the door to healing.” The site also states that this will also settle Reynolds’ claims of emotional distress and false arrest.
"While no amount of money can change what happened, bring Philando back or erase the pain that my daughter and I continue to suffer, I do hope that closing this chapter will allow us to get our lives back and move forward," Reynolds said in a statement Tuesday.
Castile was driving in Falcon Heights when he was pulled over by Officer Jeronimo Yanez. Castille was shot and killed after he told Yanez he was armed.
Yanez was later acquitted of manslaughter and other charges and resigned from the police department.
