Apple unveils basic iPhone 5C and upgraded iPhone 5S with fingerprint sensor Touch ID

Get ready to touch the iPhone in an intimate way.

Apple unveiled new versions of its ubiquitous smartphone, one of which includes a fingerprint sensor for authenticating ownership.

The tech giant confirmed the new hardware during a media event Tuesday at its California headquarters, where it showed off a stripped-down model, the iPhone 5C, and a higher-end iPhone 5S.

The phones will be released Sept. 20, although the 5C can be pre-ordered starting Friday.

The 5S has a 4-inch display and will come with several bells ‘n whistles, including the fingerprint sensor, a flashier camera and a longer battery life than the iPhone 5, Apple execs said.

The special sensor feature known as Touch ID had been rumored prior to Tuesday's announcement.
