Philippines working to help typhoon survivors amid destruction, thousands of deaths
Rescue workers in the Philippines shifted their focus Sunday to reaching trapped survivors whose homes and villages were wiped out by a catastrophic typhoon that killed up to 10,000 people in one city alone.
With roads and bridges washed away and communication lines down, many hard-hit areas of the devastated country could not be accessed, triggering fears of more tragedy to come.
“Access remains a key challenge, as some areas are still cut off from relief operations,” the United Nations office in Manila said in a statement Sunday.
