Garden State Plaza mall shooting: Suspected gunman found dead in building's basement hours after opening fire and terrifying shoppers: report

Panic reigned at New Jersey’s largest shopping mall Monday night when a gunman in a black leather jacket and a biker helmet fired several shots from a rifle, according to witnesses.

The suspect, identified as Richard Shoop, was later found dead in a construction site within the mall, NBC New York reported Tuesday morning. He was apparently killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Terrified shoppers ducked for cover or ran for exits when gunfire erupted at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus shortly before its 9:30 p.m. closing, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The 20-year-old suspect lives in Teaneck, N.J., and works at a restaurant there, two senior law enforcement officials told The Star-Ledger.
