Board of Ed touts ‘Kindergarten Connect,’ but Bronx pilot program wasn't an A+
Public school parents across the five boroughs will begin submitting kindergarten applications online next year — but some Bronx parents who were the guinea pigs for the project said it was a big pain in the mouse.
A test of the so-called “Kindergarten Connect” program was implemented in District 7 in the Bronx this year and left parents in the low-income South Bronx community confused and frustrated.
"Parents were concerned,” said Liz Flores, 30, who applied to 10 public schools using the program, but did not get into a single one.
Her daughter ended up at Heketi Community Charter School on E. 138th St. — but Flores was left with a bad feeling about the program.
“A lot of parents aren't necessarily familiar with computers,” she said. “Applying was a big struggle. It threw me off. When I went to the website, I didn't know what I was filling out.”
Kindergarten Connect is an online application process that allows parents to apply for a pre-grade-school slot without physically going to the school. The program will launch citywide this year, with the application for the 2013-14 school year available in January.
