Only God can help this racist.
Basketball legend Magic Johnson responded to Donald Sterling’s latest rant by saying he was going to pray for the banned NBA owner who slammed him for contracting HIV and questioned his commitment to the black community.
“I’m going to pray for him and hope things work out for him,” Johnson told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in an interview that aired Tuesday. “Even if I see him today, I’m going to say hello to Donald, and his wife as well.”
The NBA Hall of Famer appeared casual and upbeat during the interview, but he was still simmering inside.
“I’m not a guy who holds grudges and all that. Yes, am I upset? Of course! But at the same time, I’m a God-fearing man,” Johnson, 54, said.
Hours earlier, Johnson called a TMZ.com call-in show and defended his work in the African-American community.
“I am a proud black man,” he said. “I am one of the leaders in the black community.”
In a CNN interview that aired Monday, Sterling told Cooper that Johnson should be ashamed of himself.
“He acts so holy, I mean, he made love to every girl in every city in America. And he has AIDS,” sniped Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.
The 80-year-old also said Johnson wasn’t a good role model for black youth and called the star out for not doing enough for minorities.
“What does he do for black people?” he asked. “He doesn’t do anything.”
Johnson, who owns the Los Angeles Dodgers and supports many charitable organizations, said Sterling’s attacks didn’t faze him.
“My whole life is devoted to urban America. So, you know I just wish he knew the facts when he’s talking,” Johnson noted. “But he’s a man who’s upset and he’s reaching. He’s reaching,” the former point guard said. “He’s trying to find something that he can grab on to help him save his team.”
Sterling’s downfall came after he was caught hurling racial invective at gal pal V. Stiviano for bringing black people to Clippers games and for posting Instagram pictures of herself with Johnson.
