NBA star LeBron James and actress Octavia Spencer are teaming up to create a series honoring Madam C.J. Walker.
The scripted drama is the first production created by James’ production company, SpringHill Entertainment, and executive produced by the power forward himself.
According to Variety, the film will focus on Walker’s life as an entrepreneur and activist. Spencer will star as Walker, and announced her piece in the project on Instagram.
The series is based on the book, On Her Own Ground, which was written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, A'Lelia Bundles, who will also serve as a consultant on the series. Nicole Asher is set to write and co-executive produce the limited series, which is in talks to be featured on Netflix.
Walker is recognized as America's first self made Black female millionaire and James says that he story is “important” to tell. The mogul was orphaned at only seven years old, married at 14 and widowed by 20.
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James said in a statement. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
Zero Gravity and Warner Bros. will also partner on the project.
