An explosion took place in the Port Authority vicinity this morning, injuring four people including the suspect responsible for the blast.
Authorities responded to the incident, which took place at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, and stated they believed it to be an “intentional act,” reports NBC News.
The suspect is 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, who’s in the United States from Bangladesh. Ullah was reportedly carrying “some sort of pipe bomb or other type of improvised explosive device.” It is being said that device “either went off prematurely or only partially detonated.”
While the NYPD and FBI are investigating to see if the explosion was caused by an individual or a larger group, Mayor DeBlasio has stated that “this was an attempted terror attack.” He went on to say, “When an everyday New Yorker sees something that doesn’t make sense … don’t hold it to yourself. It is so important to speak up because you can be saving many lives by doing so.”
With the suspect in custody, Mayor DeBlasio says, “There are no other imminent threats to the city.”
