Gabby Douglas is now the third member of the famed Fierce Five to come forward about undergoing abuse from gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar.
Douglas came forward with her revelation about her abuse last night via Instagram while addressing misconstrued comments made last week after teammate Aly Raisman’s came forward with abuse allegations against Nassar.
Gabby asked people to “please hear my heart,” as she opened up about she and her teammates’ ongoing abuse and why they didn’t say something about their abuse sooner.
“I didn’t view my comments as victim shaming because I know that no matter what you wear, it NEVER gives anyone the right to harass or abuse you. It would be like saying that because of the leotards we wore, it was our fault that we were abused by Larry Nassar.”
She went on to say, “I didn’t publicly share my experiences as well as many other things because for years we were conditioned to stay silent and honestly some things were extremely painful. I wholeheartedly support my teammates for coming forward with what happened to them.”
Nassar reached a plea deal with lawyers yesterday, causing him pled guilty to 22 accounts of criminal sexual conduct in the first-degree.
The Detroit News reports that in exchange for his plea, “the Attorney General’s office has agreed not to press more charges against him involving dozens of other women who allege he sexual abused them when they were girls.”
Nassar is facing a minimum of 25 years in prison and has agreed to lifetime electronic monitoring.
