Giants vs. Jets Preseason Game Highlights

In a tightly contested preseason game between city rivals, the Jets overcame the Giants in overtime, 24-21.  This game isn’t your typical preseason game since both teams were fighting to win the Snoopy trophy in the Snoopy Bowl, appropriately named since both teams play in MetLife stadium.

The Jets started rookie Geno Smith at Quarterback and Mark Sanchez started on the bench.  Rex Ryan still hasn’t made a decision on who the starting Quarterback is as of yet but if this game served as a barometer to whom he may choose to start, based on Smith’s performance, the job seems to be Sanchez’s to lose.

1st quarter - On the first drive of the game, the Jets go three and out and punt the ball to the Giants.  The Giants respond on their first play with a David Wilson 84 yard TD run to give Giants the early lead, a Josh Brown extra point makes the score, 7-0.  The Jets respond later in the first quarter with a Smith to Ben Obomanu 22 yard pass for a TD, a Nick Folk extra point ties the score, 7-7.  Outside of the TD scoring drive, Geno Smith had a rough first quarter, going 6 for 14, 1 TD and 2 INTs.  David Wilson had 5 rushes for 92 yards, 1 TD.  At the end of the 1st quarter, the score was tied, 7-7.

2nd quarter - Giants open up the scoring in the quarter with a Josh Brown 40 yard FG to take the lead, 10-7.  Both offenses looked abysmal, as Geno Smith throws his third pick and the Giants failed to capitalize on many scoring opportunities.  Josh Brown missed a 53 yard FG and the Giants were also stopped on 4th and goal with an incomplete pass from Manning to Nicks.  Giants had a total of seven first downs on eight drives and went into halftime with the lead, 10-7.

3rd quarter - On the Jets first drive of the quarter, they drive 57 yards for the TD off a 2 yard Bilal Powell run, a Billy Cundiff extra point gives the Jets a 14-10 lead.  Giants respond later in the quarter with a Josh Brown 33 yard field goal to bring the Giants within one point, 14-13.

4th quarter - Jets’ Stephen Hill fumbles, the Jets fourth turnover of the game.  The Giants weren’t able to take advantage of the turnover but they were able to force Geno Smith to run out of the end zone for a safety later in the quarter to go up, 15-14.  Mark Sanchez enters into the game and soon commits the Jets fifth turnover which leads to a Josh Brown 50 yard FG for the Giants, 18-14.  Sanchez soon had to leave the game due to a shoulder injury suffered by a big hit, Matt Simms takes his place as QB.  Matt Simms soon leads the Jets to another scoring drive, 22 yard pass to Ryan Spadola, a Nick Folk extra point gives the Jets a 21-18 lead.  Giants were able to get a late FG from Josh Brown to tie the score, 21-21.

Overtime - Giants win the toss and on their first play, Da’Rel Scott fumbles the ball, the first turnover of the game for the Giants.  Jets were unable to capitalize as Folk misses a 39 yard FG.  On his first attempt, Coughlin called timeout to freeze him and he missed wide right.  On his legitimate attempt, he still missed wide right.  Giants were still unable to take advantage and on the Jets next drive, Simms hits Spadola for 70 yards to put the Jets in good FG position.  Jets attempt to take the FG with Billy Cundiff on 1st down and Coughlin decides to ice the kicker again by calling timeout.  Cundiff went on to miss wide right and Rex Ryan decided to bring the offense back out on the field.  After gaining a few more yards, Ryan decides to bring back out his FG unit and Cundiff is able to win the game for the Jets with a 33 yard FG, 24-21.

Geno Smith finished the game 16 for 30, 199 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs and a safety.  Matt Simms had an impressive outing going 6 for 10, 120 yards, and a TD.  Mark Sanchez went 5 for 6, 72 yards.  Jets RBs had a total of 29 carries for just 36 yards.  Ryan Spadola was the Jets leading receiver with 3 receptions for 110 yards and a TD.

Eli Manning had a bad game only going 8 for 20, 83 yards.  Curtis Painter didn’t fare much better going 13 for 29, 140 yards.  Outside of the 84 yard TD run, David Wilson didn’t do much with a total of 5 carries for 92 yards.  Jerrel Jernigan was Giants leading receiver with 5 receptions for 66 yards.

Notable injuries: Giants Safety Stevie Brown picked up a torn ACL and will be out for the rest of the season.  Mark Sanchez picked up a shoulder injury and will be day to day.
