Week of January 15 - 21, 2012

1)  A POTUS Serenade

Is it fair for anyone to have THIS MUCH SWAG? The President of These United States, Barack Obama, appeared at a fundraiser for his re-election campaign last week at The legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem.  He acknowledged that the Reverend Al Green was in the audience and expressed his appreciation for him by crooning one a line or two from one of his greatest hits "Let's Stay Together".  And the world came to know that our President can SANG!  Watch:

2) Legendary singer Etta James dies at 73

Best known for her amazing ballad "At Last" that has graced many a wedding ballroom floor, Etta James passed away on Friday, January 20th at the age of 73.   She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010 and was suffering from dementia and hepatitis C.  It is a tremendous loss for her family, her friends and all her fans world wide.  She would have turned 74 this Wednesday.  Read more about her life and listen to some of the songs that made her the Legend of which we speak as WBLS remembers the life of Etta James.

3) LL Cool J to Host the Grammys

Ladies Love Cool James (LL Cool J) has been hand picked to host the 2012 Grammy Awards.  Having won 2 Grammys of his own, he will be the first host in seven years.  He states "I'm thrilled to be part of music's biggest night… I will always have fond memories of my first Grammy Awards and to now be hosting the Grammy Awards show, in the company of so many other incredible artists, is a dream com true."   We can't wait to see how LL will put it down as the host!

It was impossible to go anywhere and NOT hear about this SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) - which when you read out what the acronym refers to should sound like a GOOD thing.  But it's not.  The breakdown of it all is that any site that allows users to post content that could enable copyright infringement could be shut down.  So the YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia and Gmail of the world could be affected - which affects you.  The current proposal (which was ultimately shelved by week's end) makes very vague distinction and leaves so much open to interpretation by the government to make it's determination of who is in violation.  Many sites last week "blacked" out in protest - Wikipedia shut down the use of it's facility for one day to give people a taste of what it would be like if SOPA were to pass.  Google blacked out it's logo in protest along with countless tweets that indicated blacking out to be an infringement on our basic rights as Americans.  The warning was issued that while the issue has been tabled… it will resurface again.  Probably not under the same name, but pretty much the same structure.  Look out for PIPA….

5) Red Tails Movie

The Red Tails Movie hit theaters on Friday January 20th.  The movie is an account of the Tuskeegee Airmen, an all-black World War II fighter pilot squadron which was sent to North Africa and Italy to escort white bomber pilots which consisted of some of the best fighter pilots in the Air Corps. Executive producer George Lucas has been working on this project for 23 years and they finally got the means to get the movie to theaters.  Starring Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo and more with Anthony Hemmingway as the director - the film promises to be one that you need to see and see again!  Check out WBLS' Interviews on the Red Carpet with the stars and director during the New York Premiere!

6) Jennifer Hudson's Family Murder Trial Date Set

A judge on Thursday ordered a man charged in the 2008 Chicago murders of Jennifer Hudson's mother and two other family members to stand trial in April despite the objections of his legal council who said she was not ready.  After listening to William Balfour's attorney say she's still building her case, a clearly exasperated Cook County Judge William Charles Burns said it didn't appear she was making any progress and set a date.

7) Jay-Z Makes First Appearance since Blue Ivy's Birth

Already back to work - so much for paternity leave - Jay Z was spotted making his first public appearance since the much heralded birth of his baby daughter Blue Ivy Carter.  Attending the grand re-opening of his New York Club 40/40 on January 18th, he passed on talking to the press aside from replying "Thank You" to the throngs of congratulations on being a new father.  It is reported that the baby's mom, Beyonce, stayed home with her newborn rather than appear for the reopening.  He did also quell the rumor that the poem that hit the internet stating that he would no longer use the "b" word in his raps since now being the father of a young lady were untrue.  He stated briefly that the poem and story are fake.

8)Nick Cannon home from the hospital after 'mild kidney failure'

We're glad to know that Nick Cannon, the America's Got Talent" host and husband of singer Mariah Carey made it home from Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center over the past weekend and is making his way back to work.  "Nick Cannon was released over the weekend to be with his family," rep Tracy Nguyen said in a statement.  "He is resting and recovering at home and would like to thank everyone who has expressed concertn, well wishes and prayers."  Welcome back Nick!

9) Evelyn & Chad Ocho Cinco are getting their own Reality Show

With all the reality show spinoffs it’s no surprise that Basketball Wives reality star Evelyn Lozada and her fiancé; football’s most eligible bachelor, Chad Ochocinco has landed their own reality show on Vh1. According to HelloBeautiful.com Evelyn is definitely maximizing her 15 minutes of fame, she most recently bagged a million dollar book deal as well as product endorsements, proving she is more that just a Basketball Wife.

10) Michael Jordan only wants Kobe Bryant to compare himself to him.

According to Yahoo.com, Basketball hall of famer Michael Jordan thinks the only baller that should be compared to his “greatness” is non-other than Kobe Bryant! We all know that MJ has never reserved his feelings about being the best in the game, but apparently only Kobe Bryant can share in the likes of Mr. Air Jordan. Although the idea of Jordon mentioning comparisons between himself and Kobe is a bit narcissistic, flatter aside, Bryant truly is one if the hardest working players in the NBA and is definitely the player most like Jordan. We can only wonder what MJ will say if Kobe becomes the greatest.
