Week of March 19 - March 24, 2012

1) TRAYVON MARTIN

Unfortunately, this isn't a story that is rare to come by in this day and age...  A young Black man, Trayvon Martin, on the way to the 7-11 during the All Star Games last month to pick up some Iced Tea and Skittles candy was profiled by a self proclaimed neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman, as being a threat and intruder in the neighborhood.  Colored by a number of factors, one of which was the alleged upsurgance of robberies in the complex over the past 15 months, Zimmerman took it upon himself to track and follow this young man and as a result, fatally shot him.  The law in Florida has it so that he is currently protected by the "stand your ground" law which states that he acted in self defense (despite the 911 dispatcher telling him NOT to pursue him and to await the police's arrival on the scene.  Zimmerman has not been arrested and new information surfaced this week that his girlfriend was with him on the phone while Martin was being followed.  While on the phone, he expressed that he was afraid and his girlfriend encouraged him to run.  He was unarmed and harmless but was gunned down in cold blood.

There's no way for us to write this from a position of non bias.  He could have been one of our sons, cousins, brothers or friends.  Justice is being sought by throngs of African American communities everywhere.  In New York on March 21st from 6 - 9 PM, people rallied for the "Million Hoodie March" crying out for justice for Trayvon Martin.  His parents were present at the rally and Martin's Mother, Sybrina Fulton spoke to the crowd and said "My heart is in pain, but to see the support of all of you really makes a difference."  Other shows of protest have included folks changing threir social networking pictures to be ones of them wearing their hoodes sweatshirts up and also mailing Skittles (full or empty) packets to the chief of police in Sanford, Bill Lee, who has since "temporarily" stepped down citing that his is a "distraciton to the case".

Then on March 23, 2012, Geraldo Rivera went on record with his thoughts on the the whole situation by stating that he fels that the hoodie Martin wore that night was just as responsible for Martin's profiling as Zimmerman was for his actions that evening.

On the same day, the President of the United States, Barack Obama made a statement speaking to the tragedy, carefully and sincerely.

8) Beyonce Breastfeeding In Public is News... but why?

From Time's Health Land

When Beyoncé breast-fed Blue Ivy at a restaurant, was she intentionally making a statement about a woman's right to nurse in public?
OMG! The biggest news in the world of breast-feeding over the past week: Beyoncé reportedly breast-fed baby Blue Ivy in public.
Even for an A-lister, the buzz over her breasts has got to be a bit daunting. Beyoncé was sighted apparently breast-feeding 7-week-old Blue Ivy as they both lunched with Daddy, Jay-Z, at New York City’s Sant Ambroeus restaurant during the last weekend of February. According to Us Weekly magazine:

Beyoncé nursed her little girl at the table, an observer tells Us Weekly. Two additional sources confirm to Us that the first-time mom has been breast-feeding her daughter.

Is this stop-the-presses kind of news? Is Beyoncé truly the breast-feeding crusader that lactivists are making her out to be, or is she just another mom with a hungry baby in tow? And does it really matter?

9) Dancing With The Stars recap this week

From Huffington Post:

Sometimes on "Dancing With the Stars," things just don't go the way you want them to. As much as I love Gladys Knight -- and Tristan MacManus -- I know that they're ultimately in jeopardy of going home after tonight's less-than-stellar performance.

Meanwhile, fan favorite Maksim Chmerkovskiy could also be in danger of exiting the ballroom earlier due to his partner Melissa Gilbert's nerves. The same could also be said for nice guy Toni Dovolani and his celebrity partner Martina Navratilova, who just can't seem to remember her steps.
