Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day


2013 marked the 27th year that Americans have recognized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King was assisnated in April 1968 and was the leader for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement. MLK Day has since been recognized as a holiday for Americans to celebrate Dr. King's life and legacy with a day of service to the community. Watch Dr. King's "I Have A Dream Speech" below:
 

 

President Barack Obama's Second Inauguration Ceremony

MLK Day was also the day of President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C. President Obama paid tribute to MLK's birthday and Abe Lincoln by using both of their Bibles for his swearing in. Mr. President looked back over the ceremony after his swearing in and said, "I want to look out one more time. I'll never see this again."

2013 Presidential Inauguration Ball


Following the inauguration ceremonies was the inauguration Balls. President Obama and First Lady Michelle made appearences at two official inaugural balls- the Commander-In-Chief's Ball and the Official Inaugural Ball, which were both held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson were among the performers at the inaugural balls, and President Obama and First Lady Michelle danced their first dance to Jennifer Hudson's rendtion of Al Green's hit, "Let's Stay Together". Beyonce's Lip Sync Controversy

Beyonce Knowles sang the National Anthem during President Obama's inauguration ceremony and since has been accused of lip syncing the Anthem instead of singing live. A US Marine Band rep explained, “all music is pre-recorded for the ceremony because there are so many eventualities and conditions that day. We performed, live, the band. But we received last-minute word that Beyonce was going to use the pre-recorded vocal track. Those were the instructions we were given. We don’t know what the reason why.”

It was reported by the Huffington Post that, "each piece of music scheduled for performance in the Inauguration is pre-recorded for use in case of freezing temperatures, equipment failure, or extenuating circumstances."

Sloane Stephens Beats Serena Williams In Austrailian Open


19 -year -old Sloane Stephens defeated her tennis idol, Serena Williams, during their quarterfinal match at the Australian Open tennis championship. This match is the farthest that Sloane has ever gotten, while Serena was on a 20-match winning streak. Although Serena suffered an ankle injury during the match, the 31- year- old tennis super star was unable to come back to win the match, even after she called her trainer on the court for a medical time out. Ironically, Serena Williams has been Sloane's idol since she was a child, and now she's defeated her to move on to the next round.

Rosa Parks Will Be Honored With Statue On Capitol Hill

 
Rosa Parks Statue Will Be Added to Capitol Later This Year
 

Later this year, Rosa Parks will be honored with a statue at Capitol HIll's Statuary Hill, making her the first African American woman to receive this honor. Rosa Parks, who is notably recognized as the "mother of the civil rights movement", will be a representative of the state of Alabama as each of the 50 states donates two statues of their most prominent citizens to Statuary Hall.

The statue will be revealed in late 2013. 

In addition to the statue, the U.S Postal Service is also celebrating the life of Rosa Parks with a special Historic Forever stamp in honor of Rosa Parks' 100th birthday, which will be sold beginning Feb. 4.

Robin Roberts Returns To ABC's Good Morning America

"Good Morning America" co-host, Robin Roberts, returned to ABC to do a "test run" as she's on her way back to the "GMA" news desk. She hopes to be back on the air in February after going through a bone-marrow transplant in back in September. This week, she finished the first of several off-air test runs before she returns to TV for good.

Nene Leakes has been everywhere lately promoting her role on "The New Normal" and her recent engagement to her ex-husband, Gregg Leakes. She recently made an appearence on the Ellen Degeneres show to dish about her new life, when she was surprised by a few men who decided to start Nene's bachelorette festivities a little early. Nene also dished about her wedding plans stating, "The first time we had a nice sized wedding. It was very traditional so this time I want to be over the top and very fairytale."
