What ABC's 'What Would You Do' Says About Our Ideas on Interracial Relationships.
A recent episode of ABC’s ‘What Would You Do?’ tested the patrons in Harlem barbershop, Denny Moe’s, about their convictions on interracial relationships.
Black actress “Rachael,” is posing as an employee at the barbershop when “Gabriel,” a black actor walks in. Soon Gabriel’s girlfriend, a white actress, walks in with a “Hi baby!” Rachael immediately lashes out with disrespectful comments about their relationship. “You with a white girl?” she says. However, time after time, someone in the shop called Rachael out on the ignorance she was perpetuating.
The people that were present in Denny Moe’s that day aren’t exactly representative of the whole black population, but it speaks to a more progressive way of thinking that I’m beginning to see around me more often.
Both in social situations and on my social networks, I tend to see more of a “love is love” approach to interracial couples and homosexual couples alike.
Of course there are black women who still say things like “black men date white women because they can’t handle a strong black woman.” And there are black men who say things like, “once I make it, I’m going to date a white woman.” But the Denny Moe’s episode makes me think we’re making progress in our ideas about interracial dating.
You like who you like, right?
