Kandi Burruss has written classic songs for TLC, Destiny’s Child, Pink, and her own group Xscape. But what are her personal favorites?
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, she spoke about her “Mount Rushmore” of songs that she penned.
“Just Kickin’ It” was big for Xscape, our first hit,” Burruss said “Of course, ‘No Scrubs.’ ‘No Scrubs’ will forever be my gift that keeps on giving back to me. People keep sampling it.”
“‘Bills, Bills, Bills,’ because that one you can just break out in song at any given moment when people start talking about a bill,” she continued, naming Destiny’s Child’s 1999 single.
She then chose a song that was a hit from her debut project, Hey Kandi…
“For me, for my song, ‘Don’t Think I’m Not,’ you know? So, that one’s always a winner too,” she said.
Kandi also wrote “There You Go”, Pink’s debut single from her 2000 album Can’t Take Me Home.
“That was the first single that blew up for her, and it’s so funny because it’s so different from her music that she did after,” she explained.”But I would love to work with her in her current era and the music that she does.”
The former Real Housewives of Atlanta that she would love to work with Rihanna and reconnect with Beyoncé
“I’ve always wanted to work with Rihanna even though I know she hasn’t put out anything in a minute. Like, where’s the album? I would love to work with her and have her finally drop something new,” she said.
“And then I want to go back in with Beyoncé too. We’ve already worked together, obviously. But I would love to work with her in this current era,” she noted.
Outside of music, Burruss is a producer on Othello, the Broadway production starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. The experience caused her to reflect on loving theater as a high schooler.
“The teenage version of me would be hitting flips right now because I went to a performing arts school,” she said.
“I was in the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta for musical theater and theater. And to see that I’ve made it to the point where I’ve produced four Broadway shows, and now the show that I’m producing, Othello, is breaking Broadway records and making history, like, it’s crazy,” said Burruss.
