Black Composers Upsouth is presented through a collaboration between Continuum Culture & Arts and the Greenwich House Music School, spotlighting innovative works rooted in Black musical traditions. The event is part of Soup & Sound, an initiative of Continuum Culture & Arts, a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to community-driven performances. Backed by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the City Council, the program reflects an ongoing investment in neighborhood cultural programming.

A Place of Rage Film Screening

A Place of Rage, a documentary by British filmmaker Pratibha Parmar, shines a light on the impact of Black women in the civil rights and feminist movements. Featuring Angela Davis, June Jordan, and Alice Walker, the film reexamines how leaders like Rosa Parks and Fannie Lou Hamer helped reshape American history. With music from Prince, Janet Jackson, and the Staple Singers, the documentary brings energy to a vital chapter in Black history. Parmar’s work earned critical acclaim and was named Best Historical Documentary by the National Black Programming Consortium.

VOICES OF BLACK POWHER : KINGS EDITION

On April 19th at 8 p.m., Hall of Fame Studios will host a gathering that turns the spotlight toward Black men whose leadership and resilience often go unseen. Organized by Voices of Black PowHer in collaboration with PlaywitRox, the evening marks a rare and intentional shift—centering those who protect, guide, and uplift their communities without fanfare. For years, Voices of Black PowHer has focused on empowering Black women; this moment expands that mission by embracing solidarity with their male counterparts. The event aims to create space for reflection, recognition, and celebration. It is, at its core, an homage to the brilliance of Black men and the power they quietly carry.

Who Can Publish? A [short] History of Black Women (Self) Publishers

Since 2015, artist OlaRonke Akinmowo has led The Free Black Women’s Library—an evolving literary and community-driven project rooted in Black feminist care. What began as a mobile installation has grown into a vibrant Brooklyn-based space offering a curated archive of more than 5,000 books by Black women and nonbinary authors. Beyond literature, the space supports its community with a period pantry, a backyard garden, and a rotating series of free public programs. Visitors can take part in weekly book swaps, join virtual reading clubs, or browse the project’s free store. At its core, the library stands as a living monument to mutual aid, cultural preservation, and collective empowerment.

Afro Arts Show
