Karen Huger will have to serve out her full DUI sentence after being denied work release.
We previously reported that Huger was charged with a DUI and negligent driving after being involved in a single-car crash on March 17, 2024. Although she denied any wrongdoing while filming the ninth season of The Real Housewives of Potomac, however, the police bodycam footage showed that she was heavily intoxicated, slurring her words, and disheveled while speaking to the first responders.
She was offered a plea deal, but decided to reject it to have her day in court. Huger was found guilty and sentenced to one year in jail. During her time in jail, Huger had been collecting good behavior credits within her first two months to where she could get an early release, according to reports.
The Grande Dame had applied for the work release program, and it was approved by the Correction officials, but it was denied by Judge Terrance McGann. Montgomery County defense attorney David Moyse said, “She drew the wrong judge. It was just horrible luck.”
The work release program allows inmates to leave the jail for a certain number of hours to maintain employment, participate in other approved activities, and get an education. After, the inmates would return to their cells during the non-working hours.
Huger’s attorney, David Martella, expressed his disappointment in Judge McGann’s decision because she would have been able to return to the rehab she was attending before she was sentenced.
“It’s a great program,” Martella said. “We were disappointed she wasn’t approved.” It is not clear why McGann denied Huger’s work-release request; however, the former reality star has had three other DUI incidents in the past.
