Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has officially retired his signature mohawk, debuting a shorter, more refined hairstyle. The change comes after the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl.

“I’ve wanted to do it for a while but it was kind of one of those superstitions,” Mahomes said during a recent press conference. “I kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it.”

Despite the team’s success, Mahomes had grown weary of his longer locks. “I had told everybody during the season that win or lose, if we win three in a row, or … I’m getting the hair cut,” he explained. “I’ve had enough of it.”

A New Chapter

Mahomes’ longtime barber, DeJuan Bonds, revealed that the decision to cut the mohawk was not entirely spontaneous. “I just think with the end of the season, frustration maybe, like, ‘You know what, I’m done. It’s time for a new look, change,’ and I think that’s pretty much what prompted his sudden urge,” Bonds said.

Bonds also noted that Mahomes had previously considered changing his hairstyle when he became a father. “He had mentioned during that time that entering fatherhood, he needed to go ahead and change up his hairstyle and didn’t want to be wearing a mohawk,” Bonds recalled.

The new haircut, a simple cropped style with a fade on the side, marks a departure from the mohawk that had become synonymous with Mahomes’ image. “I look way better now with … I’ll be keeping this going forward,” Mahomes affirmed.

Embracing Change

Beyond aesthetics, Mahomes’ decision reflects a personal evolution. “I can’t have two kids and a mohawk,” he joked during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “I’ve got to do something.”

As Mahomes transitions into this new phase, both personally and professionally, his updated look symbolizes a fresh start. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see how this change translates on the field in the upcoming season.
