Vanessa Simmons offered a rare and carefully measured look into her longtime relationship with Mike Wayans during her appearance on the Her Rich Life Podcast — but she made it clear from the start that she was stepping outside her comfort zone.
When host Lisa Easton asked how she and Mike first met, calling the Wayans clan “a legendary… dynasty [in] comedy [and] entertainment,” Vanessa agreed to share the story while reminding listeners why she rarely speaks about her personal life.
“We met pretty young,” she began. “We met, ironically, 10 days before I was moving to L.A. or making a move to L.A.”
The encounter, she explained, happened casually. “We met out, just at a night out, and I was moving to L.A. Well, coming to explore L.A. to see if it could be a possibility.”
The two were introduced through mutual friends, and Mike immediately offered to help her find her footing in a new city. “He’s like, ‘Oh, you’re coming to L.A.? I can show you around,’” she said.

What started as a friendly gesture soon laid the foundation for a deeper connection. “We were just friends and then it grew from there,” Vanessa added, emphasizing that their relationship began organically and without pressure.
Still, even as she recounted the early days of their bond, Vanessa acknowledged her discomfort with discussing the relationship publicly.
“I must say, they are incredibly private,” she said of the Wayans family. “And so that’s why I really don’t put a lot of highlight or talk a lot about my relationship. It’s just because they are private, so I don’t even like to dive into. I feel even this is too much.”
For Vanessa, the decision to keep certain aspects of her life “secret and sacred” stems from experience. “People have a lot of opinions and things they feel… and I just can’t ever feed into it or give in to it. Not even discuss it,” she explained.
She also questioned the motives behind public curiosity: “Everyone wants to know, but is it really because they care or just because they’re nosey?”
Her comments highlighted the delicate balance she maintains — sharing pieces of her life with the world while fiercely protecting the parts that matter most.
