Hip-hop legend Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell may be returning to politics.

Campbell resigned from coaching high school football for a potential congressional run in his home state of Florida.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter),  Campbell announced his plans.

“Good morning. I am officially stepping down as Head Football Coach at Miami Edison Senior High School,” Campbell wrote.

He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach football, which was his first love.

“I would like to thank the principal, athletic director, alumni president, board members, my coaching staff, and—most importantly—the players for giving me the opportunity to lead and serve at Miami Edison,” he continued. “Coaching at this historic school has been an honor.”

Campbell alluded to his potential run for political office that sparked his decision. He said, “it would be a disservice to his players” if he continued coaching.

“I do not want to shortchange the young men at Miami Edison while pursuing a congressional seat,” Campbell said.

“I believe we are leaving Miami Edison better than we found it,” Campbell said. “The program now has brand-new locker rooms, upgraded football facilities, and a strong apparel partnership with Adidas.”

If Campbell runs for Congress, he is expected to challenge Democratic incumbent Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

Campbell is not a stranger to the Miami political landscape. In 2011, Campbell ran in the special election to replace the recalled Carlos Alvarez. He campaigned as a “pro people” candidate to bridge the gap between Miami’s glitzy skyscrapers and its underserved communities. His platform included taxing the rich, legalizing and taxing strip clubs to fund community programs, and increasing police transparency. In the election, he finished fourth in a field of 11 candidates, securing about 11% of the vote.

Along with his political future, Campbell also shared that he will be working on film projects, Liberty City Optimist, and his new NIL venture, Luke Sports.
