MORE THAN JUST A CONCERT
First launched in 1994, the festival coincided with the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine. While it was intended to be a one-off “Essence Music Festival,” the three-day extravaganza was so overwhelmingly successful, with more than 142,000 attendees. What started as a birthday party quickly became a permanent fixture and cultural phenomenon on the summer calendar, cementing New Orleans as its primary home and the “Superdome” as its main stage.
While the festival’s nighttime concerts have legendary acts such as Frankie Beverly & Maze, Prince, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, and Luther Vandross, the event’s heart lies in its daytime programming. Throughout the years, it expanded into the Essence Empowerment Experience, focusing on all aspects of Black life, including seminars on economic empowerment: Wealth building and entrepreneurship, wellness, politics & justice, and community impact.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2006, the festival was temporarily moved to Houston, Texas. In 2007, it returned to New Orleans the following year, a major highlight in the city’s recovery efforts. In 2019, the brand officially rebranded to the Essence Festival of Culture to reflect its wide-ranging influence on fashion, tech, and film.
