Savannah Guthrie returned to NBC’s Today on Monday, marking her first appearance since a frightening security breach disrupted the morning show’s Rockefeller Plaza studio last week.
The veteran co-anchor resumed her seat alongside Sheinelle Jones, who filled in for Craig Melvin during his previously scheduled family vacation. Guthrie did not publicly address the incident during the broadcast. Instead, the program continued with its regularly scheduled news and feature segments.
Her return came just days after a man allegedly bypassed studio security and entered a restricted backstage area while searching for longtime weather anchor Al Roker. Authorities said the suspect instead confronted Melvin, allegedly shouting racial slurs before security intervened. No injuries were reported, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward.
The unsettling incident unfolded shortly before the live broadcast on July 16. According to investigators, the suspect now faces multiple criminal charges, including hate crime-related counts tied to burglary, menacing and criminal trespass. A judge has also issued protective orders for Melvin and Roker.
Quiet Return After Frightening Week
Although Guthrie remained silent about the incident on air, her return signaled a sense of normalcy for viewers after several days dominated by security concerns. Melvin addressed the incident during the show’s July 17 broadcast, reassuring viewers that everyone involved remained safe.
“We are just very happy that everyone is safe,” Melvin said.
He also thanked viewers for the outpouring of support following the frightening encounter. Roker later echoed that sentiment in a social media post, emphasizing the close bond among the Today team.
“You come after one of us, you come after all of us,” Roker wrote.
NBC has also reaffirmed its commitment to employee safety. The network said it continues working with law enforcement while reviewing existing security procedures following the breach.
The incident raised questions about how an individual was able to gain access to restricted areas inside one of the country’s most recognizable television studios. Reports indicate at least one security employee was dismissed following the breach as NBC evaluated its security response.
Looking Ahead
Guthrie’s return comes during an already emotional year for the longtime journalist. Earlier this year, she stepped away from the program while dealing with a deeply personal family crisis involving the disappearance of her mother. She has since resumed her regular duties while balancing several professional commitments.
Her latest appearance may be brief. Before last week’s security incident, Guthrie announced she would soon leave temporarily to film NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show, which is expected to premiere next year. The project is executive produced by Jimmy Fallon in partnership with The New York Times.
