Why Did I Get Married Again? marks the third installment in Tyler Perry’s hit franchise.
Written, directed by, and starring Perry, the film reunites a tight-knit circle of lovers, friends, and frenemies on their signature relationship retreat—where long-buried secrets, humor, and high drama test their commitment once more.
”So, why the extended break? “What happens with me is that I write and let the characters speak,” says Perry, who also created the 2010s spinoff series “For Better or Worse.” “As I’m getting older and they are getting older, our lives are changing.”
Perry also noted the “our personal experiences in raising children and aging parents,” he says. ”That lends itself to all of these characters having a lot more to say, so they dictated that it was time to tell the story.“
Sharon Leal, Perry’s on-screen wife, added, “It’s been a long time coming.”
According to the logline for the film, the couple reunites in celebration as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question: why did they get married… again?
Why Did I Get Married Again? reunites Perry (Terry), Leal (Dianne), Tasha Smith (Angela), Michael Jai White (Marcus), Jill Scott (Sheila), Lamman Rucker (Troy), and Richard T. Jones (Mike).
THE FILM HAS A NEW CAST MEMBER
For the latest installment, Taraji P. Henson joins the cast. Perry explained the new energy that the acclaimed actor brings to the film.
“Roselyn didn’t have to struggle with not having a partner for their children,” Perry says. “Her point of view comes from a woman who raised her son practically by herself. And there is a lot of resentment for the way some of that was done.”
Why Did I Get Married Again premieres September 9 on Netflix.
