Jamie Foxx opens up about his near-fatal 2023 stroke and the road to recovery.
Appearing on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Foxx shared details about his experince
“I was talking to him,” Foxx said, pointing to the sky. “This is me, bro. I put the smiles on people’s faces. Look at all these bad people out here. Why me?”
“I couldn’t make sense of it, and I remember — the parts I do remember, like the rehab part — was frustrating,” said Foxx. “Cause I remember they said, ‘You got a second chance.’ I said, ‘f— the second chance. What was wrong with my first chance?’”
Through it all, Foxx said he kept his sense of humor.
“They couldn’t do wellness checks on me because I only had comedy to lean on,” said Foxx. “So I was joking all the time.”
His daughter, Corinne Foxx, who joined him on the podcast, brought up how he acted like Denzel Washington when he was first admitted.
“Not because he didn’t know who it was, but because he was making a joke,” Corinne said.
But that was the only way that I could stay… that’s the only way that I could find myself,” Foxx said. “Because here’s the truth of it: When this all transpired, I went back to meet the 60 nurses that kept me alive.”
In April 2023, Foxx suffered a life-threatening medical emergency while filming the movie Back in Action in Atlanta. He later revealed it was caused by a sudden brain bleed that led to a stroke. After initially experiencing a severe headache, Foxx blacked out and spent 20 days in a coma. Afterwards, he went through a grueling rehabilitation process where he had to relearn basic physical abilities like walking.
