An Alabama elementary student is dead after committing suicide because of relentless bullying she endured at school.

According to the CBS News, 9-year-old McKenzie Adams hanged herself last Monday (Dec. 3) inside her Linden, AL home. Her grandmother discovered her body.

Adams’ family says the fourth grader “was being bullied the entire school year” because of her friendship with a white boy at school.

“She was being bullied the entire school year, with words such as ‘kill yourself,’ ‘you think you’re white because you ride with that white boy,’ ‘you ugly,’ ‘black b-tch,’ ‘just die’,” says Eddwina Harris, McKenzie’s aunt.

Adams’ relatives say the 9-year-old told teachers and the principal about the bullying “multiple times,” and McKenzie’s mother, Jasmine Adams, feels like the school system let her daughter down.

“She told me that this one particular child was writing her nasty notes in class,” said the mother, Jasmine Adams. “It was just things you wouldn’t think a 9-year-old should know. And my baby, to tell me some of the things they had said to her, I was like, ‘Where are they learning this from?”

McKenzie’s mom transferred her to U.S. Jones Elementary School after she was bullied at another school. But she couldn’t escape their terror.

“Part of it could have been because she rode to school with a white family. And a lot of it was race. Some of the student bullies would say to her, ‘Why you riding with white people? You’re black, you’re ugly. You should just die.’”

Administrators at U.S. Jones Elementary released a statement about Adams’ death.

“Certainly our hearts goes out to the family and friends of Mckenzie and her fellow students as well as her teachers. Demopolis school system has provided grief counselors and crisis counselors at the school since this and ministers and youth ministers have been at the campus since the date of this incident.”
