The three men who were charged and convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery are fighting to have their hate crime conviction overturned.
In 2020, Greg McMichael and his son Travis, were seen chasing down Arbery as he jogged through a neighborhood in Atlanta. The McMichael’s neighbor, William Bryan joined in the chase in his vehicle and recorded the entire incident on video including the moment when Arbery was fatally shot.
Once they were arrested, they told the police that they thought that Arbery was stealing from a nearby home that was under construction at that time. Now the three men are looking to have their hate crime convictions overturned after prosecutors proved that their decision to shoot and kill Arbery was based on racism.
It was reported that the prosecutors used a lot of social media posts, text messages, and witness statements, which described the men’s use of racial slurs and negative comments about Black people.
The McMichaels and Bryan are currently facing a life sentence on state murder charges. What are your thoughts on this?
