In a court response filed recently, singer Akon, born Aliaune Badara Thiam, has formally asked for joint legal and physical custody of his 17-year-old daughter, Journey, amid the divorce proceedings with his estranged wife, Tomeka Thiam.
Custody Battle Intensifies
Tomeka Thiam filed for divorce in September 2025, citing “irreconcilable differences” just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. In her petition, she requested joint legal custody but sought sole physical custody of their daughter, allowing Akon visitation rights. In addition, she is asking for spousal support, while asking the court to prevent him from seeking support in return.
In his response, however, Akon argues for a more equitable role in his daughter’s life. He is asking the court to grant him not just input on legal decisions, but also regular access to Journey, seeking full joint custody instead of just visitation.
The couple has one child together, but Akon has publicly discussed having nine children overall. His views on family structure are nontraditional: he has defended polygamy in interviews, calling it part of his African cultural heritage. He has said, “(Polygamy is) part of our culture. Absolutely … For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us.”
Akon has also described his parenting philosophy in past interviews. He stated that while he prioritizes providing for his children, his role does not always involve attending every school recital or holiday. Instead, he stressed communication: “That’s what my FaceTime phone is for.”
As both parents now press their cases in court, the crux is how custody will be shared for their teen daughter. Analysts say a decision may hinge on whether a judge finds that joint physical custody is in Journey’s best interest — balancing parental involvement with stability. The case also underscores the complexities of Akon’s broader family life, including his children from other relationships.
