The legacy of basketball legend Allen Iverson will be immortalized as the City of Newport News announces the renaming of 16th Street to “Allen Iverson Way.” This tribute to Iverson, known affectionately as “The Answer,” symbolizes his profound impact on the community and his unparalleled contributions to the sport.
Scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, at Anderson Park, the renaming ceremony will serve as a momentous occasion for both Iverson and the city that shaped his formative years. Newport News City Councilman John Eley expressed the community’s overwhelming pride in Iverson’s achievements, emphasizing the significance of celebrating his success in the place where he spent his childhood, particularly in Stuart Gardens.
“Allen’s trailblazing career is a testament that when you dream big and think big, anything is possible,” remarked Councilman Eley. “We’re excited to celebrate him and name this street in his honor.”
A native of the peninsula, Iverson rose to prominence as one of the most electrifying players in NBA history. His illustrious 14-year career saw him excel at both the shooting guard and point guard positions, leaving an indelible mark on the league. Notably, Iverson was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1997 and earned 11 All-Star selections throughout his tenure.
Renowned for his extraordinary scoring prowess and unparalleled ball-handling skills, Iverson’s impact transcended statistics. In 2001, he claimed the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) title, solidifying his status as one of the game’s all-time greats.
While Iverson’s storied career included stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies, his connection to Newport News remained steadfast. Now, with the dedication of “Allen Iverson Way,” his enduring legacy will serve as an inspiration for future generations.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Iverson expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him by his hometown. “Newport News holds a special place in my heart, and I am deeply humbled by this recognition,” said Iverson. “To have a street named after me in the community where it all began is truly a dream come true.”
As Newport News prepares to celebrate one of its own, the renaming of 16th Street to “Allen Iverson Way” stands as a testament to Iverson’s enduring impact, both on and off the basketball court.
