Poet and activist Amanda Gorman has been named the latest ambassador for UNICEF. The appointment was announced as the world-renowned young writer prepares to perform an original poem at the 2025 UNICEF Gala.
A New Role for a Young Voice
Gorman, 27, has worked with UNICEF since 2021. The organization’s statement noted that she has used her platform to advocate for children’s rights, especially for those living in emergency settings.
Reflecting on the new role, Gorman said: “Working with UNICEF has shown me that when we choose to uplift children, we are choosing to uplift our shared future.” She added: “It is an honor to become a UNICEF Ambassador… especially for children living through crisis.”
In UNICEF’s words, she has “worked relentlessly to ensure that every child is healthy, educated, protected and respected.” The organization emphasized her advocacy, fundraising efforts, and focus on children worldwide in need of urgent support.
Gorman’s ambassadorship comes at a time of deep global challenges. UNICEF continues to highlight growing numbers of children affected by conflict, climate crises, and economic instability.
Through her role, Gorman aims to bring attention not just to individual crises but also to systemic issues facing children — including access to education, health, protection, and hope for a better future. “Art uniquely accesses our humanity,” she said, “drawing us in and urging us to look closer at lives affected by large-scale incidents such as conflict or climate disasters.”
UNICEF’s leadership welcomed her appointment. Michael J. Nyenhuis, President and CEO of UNICEF USA, said, “Amanda has a singular talent for communicating the weight of a moment in a way that invites conversation and enacts change.” He added that they are “thrilled for Amanda to formally join UNICEF’s mission … and look forward to watching her inspire the next generation of philanthropists.”
