Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky were fined following their loss to Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. The WNBA announced that Reese would be fined $1,000 for “[failing] to make herself available to the media for interviews.” The Chicago Sky organization was also fined $5,000 for not ensuring that all players comply with WNBA media policies.
Reese On-Court Drama and Aftermath
This game marked the first time Reese and Clark faced off in the WNBA. However, it was Reese’s teammate, Chennedy Carter, who drew headlines for her on-court actions. As Clark attempted to get the ball from her teammate Aliyah Boston, Carter delivered a blow that sent Clark to the floor. Reese was seen celebrating Carter’s foul against Clark.
Initially, Carter’s foul was classified as a common foul. However, after reviewing the play, the WNBA upgraded it to a flagrant-1 violation. Carter was asked about the incident during a postgame presser and refused to discuss Clark, saying, “I ain’t answering no Caitlin Clark questions.” Later, Carter criticized Clark’s style of play on Instagram’s Threads app, stating, “That’s that on that because besides three-point shooting, what does [Clark] bring to the table, man?”
Reactions and Statements
Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon addressed the incident, emphasizing the importance of competitive spirit and sportsmanship. “Physical play, intensity, and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball. Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game,” Weatherspoon said. “She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”
Clark, who was not expecting the foul, reflected on the physical nature of the game during her postgame interview. “I grew up playing basketball with the boys. It’s always been physical and feisty, and you have to find a way to hold your own,” Clark said. Despite the physical play, she maintained focus, saying, “It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”
Clark and the Indiana Fever will face the Chicago Sky again on June 16, providing another opportunity for both teams to display their competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
