Actor Ángel Salazar, best known for his role as Al Pacino’s sidekick “Chi Chi” in “Scarface” has passed away.
TMZ reported that Ann Wingsong, a close friend and rep of the actor, revealed that Salazar passed away in his sleep while at a friend’s house in Brooklyn over the weekend. She recounts the friend going to check in on Salazar when he found him in the bed unresponsive.
A cause of death has not been disclosed but the rep did say that he did suffer from heart issues. Salazar landed the role of Chi Chi in the 1983 Brian DePalma film, “Scarface.” He played Pacino’s character, Tony Montana, best friend, and will be remembered for saving Tony’s life in the infamous chainsaw scene.
Chi Chi is also remembered for his death scene at the end of the movie when he is fatally shot at the hands of drug kingpin Alejandro Sosa’s squad. Other than his role in “Scarface,” Salazar was featured in the movies “Punchline” working opposite Tom Hanks and in “Carlito’s Way,” working with Al Pacino again.
Ángel Salazar was also known as a comedian and made a special appearance on HBO’s comedy special, “Last Comic Standing.” Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time.
