Beyonce and Jay-Z made a rare appearance at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards last night, and they both honored family as they accepted GLAAD’s Vanguard Award.
Hollywood’s power couple took the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as the Bey Hive swarmed to watch their queen and her hubby receive the Vanguard Award at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
“I wanna honor my mother, who received the award last year. I get to follow in her footsteps of spreading love and acceptance; and her beautiful speech at the end of the song smile; and for allowing me to tell her story,” Jay-Z told the room as he encouraged them to acknowledge his mother.
Following her husband, an emotional Bey too honored a member of her family, an uncle she lost to HIV.
“I wanna dedicate this award to my uncle Johnny – the most fabulous gay man I’ve ever known – he lived his truth and he was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country wasn’t as accepting. And witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived.”
She continued “I’m hopeful that his struggle served to other pathways for other young people to live more freely. LGBTQI are human rights.”
