Tony-winning actor Billy Porter offered fans a heartfelt update Friday on his health after a prolonged battle with sepsis that required hospitalization and forced him off the Broadway stage.

Porter, 55, said in a video message shared on social media that the past four months have been among the hardest of his life. “It’s been a very, very challenging four months,” he said, adding that the experience has reshaped how he thinks about his body and his work.

The Pose star, who earlier this year was diagnosed with a “serious case of sepsis,” said he is now on a steady path toward recovery. “I’m slowly regaining my strength every day,” Porter said, speaking directly to supporters. “I’m grateful for every message, every prayer, and every moment of love.”

Sepsis is a dangerous condition in which the body’s response to infection triggers systemic inflammation and organ dysfunction. Doctors treating Porter stressed that early intervention and rest have been critical to his progress. “His doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery,” the production of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club said when confirming his withdrawal from the Broadway show in September.

Broadway Impact

Porter’s illness had immediate effects on the Broadway revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, where he had been performing as the Emcee. Producers announced in early September that Porter would withdraw from the show and that its run would end earlier than planned. “Due to a serious case of sepsis, Billy Porter must also withdraw from the production,” the statement read, noting that understudies Marty Lauter and David Merino would complete scheduled performances.

Producers described the decision to close the musical ahead of its original October 19 date as made “with a heavy heart.” They praised Porter’s contribution and wished him well. “Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent,” producer Adam Speers said at the time.

Porter’s absence also led to other cast members stepping into expanded roles. Marisha Wallace, who played Sally Bowles opposite Porter, continued with the production until its final curtain. Fans and colleagues took to social media to share messages of support and admiration during that transition.

In his recent update, Porter also promoted his role in the upcoming Amazon Prime film Christmas Karma, a Bollywood-inspired musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol. He said art has helped sustain him during recovery.

“Art heals,” he said. “It gives me purpose and strength when I need it most.”

Porter encouraged fans to prioritize their health and cherish time with loved ones. “Life is tender,” he said. “Take care of yourselves, because we don’t know what tomorrow brings.”
