Award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter says a recent health crisis nearly cost him his life. The star revealed he was “dead for three days” during a severe battle with sepsis that led to a lengthy hospitalization.

Porter, 56, shared details of the medical emergency while discussing his recovery from urosepsis, a life-threatening infection that spreads through the bloodstream. The illness forced him to step away from his starring role in the Broadway revival of Cabaret in 2025.

The Emmy, Tony and Grammy winner said the experience was both terrifying and transformative. In interviews and social media updates, he described how close he came to dying and how long his recovery has taken.

“Some of you may or may not know that I was in the hospital very ill this fall with urosepsis,” Porter said in a video update to fans. “It was not easy. It’s been a very, very challenging four months.”

A Life-Threatening Infection

Sepsis occurs when the body has an extreme reaction to an infection. The immune response can cause inflammation, organ damage and potentially death if untreated.

Porter’s illness reportedly began with a urinary tract infection that progressed into urosepsis, a severe form of the condition that affects the urinary system.

During the worst stage of the illness, Porter said doctors fought to stabilize him as his body shut down. He later told audiences the experience left him clinically dead for several days before medical teams were able to revive him.

The actor has not detailed every aspect of the medical emergency. However, he has emphasized how close he came to losing his life.

Friends and fans responded with an outpouring of support as news of his hospitalization spread. The illness also forced him to withdraw from Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club on Broadway earlier than planned.

Producers later confirmed his departure, stating doctors advised him to maintain a restful schedule during recovery.

A Long Road Back

Porter says the months since his hospitalization have focused on healing and rebuilding strength. The performer expressed gratitude for the medical teams, family and fans who supported him during the ordeal.

“And I wanted to thank everybody for your prayers and your love and sending me all the vibes,” Porter said. “I felt every single one of them.”

The star also expressed optimism about the future as he continues to recover.

“And I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery,” he said. “I’m not there yet, but I’m on the road to that.”

Porter rose to international fame for his role as Pray Tell in the FX series Pose. He made history in 2019 as the first openly gay Black man to win the Emmy Award for lead actor in a drama series.

Despite the frightening health battle, Porter says surviving the experience has given him renewed perspective.

For now, the performer is focused on recovery and returning to the stage. He has assured fans that he is determined to keep creating.

“I know that I’m alive today,” Porter said, reflecting on the ordeal, “and that means there’s more work to do.”
