Veteran broadcaster Bryant Gumbel, 77, was hospitalized Monday night after a sudden medical emergency at his Manhattan apartment, according to multiple reports. A family member told the outlet TMZ that he is “okay,” though no other details have been released.
Incident and Immediate Response
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after 9 p.m. ET Monday, when first responders arrived at his residence in Manhattan and transported Gumbel on a gurney to a nearby hospital. The nature of his condition and what led to the emergency remain undisclosed. TMZ noted that as of Tuesday afternoon, he remained under medical care.
A family member reached by media said simply, “He’s okay,” and asked for privacy while Gumbel recovers. Representatives for Gumbel have not issued an official statement.
Gumbel rose to national prominence as co-host of Today from 1982 to 1997 and later anchored the acclaimed HBO series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel from 1995 until its conclusion in 2023. His more than five-decade career earned him multiple Emmy Awards and a reputation as a bold interviewer who blended news, sports and social commentary.
In 2009, Gumbel publicly disclosed he had surgery to remove a malignant lung tumour, citing his earlier heavy smoking as a factor. Last December, his older brother, fellow broadcaster Greg Gumbel, died at age 78 after a battle with pancreatic cancer — a personal loss that Gumbel publicly acknowledged had deeply affected him.
