On Sunday, May 11, 2025, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony returned to Syracuse University to deliver the commencement address for the Class of 2025. The ceremony took place at the JMA Wireless Dome, where Anthony led the Orange to their only NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2003.

A Full-Circle Moment

Standing before thousands of graduates, Anthony reflected on his journey from a freshman phenom to a Hall of Fame finalist. “This is a full-circle moment,” he said. “It serves as a powerful reminder of how education, resilience, and a supportive community can empower you to achieve your dreams.”

Anthony’s speech emphasized the importance of adaptability and perseverance. “Life had other plans,” he noted, addressing the unpredictability of life’s path and the need to remain open to change.

A Personal Message to His Son

In a touching moment, Anthony directed part of his speech to his son, Kiyan Anthony, who was among the graduates. He encouraged Kiyan to stay grounded and embrace the journey ahead. “Remain open to where life leads,” he advised, highlighting the significance of staying true to oneself amidst life’s uncertainties.

Legacy Beyond the Court

Anthony’s impact on Syracuse extends beyond his collegiate success. He contributed $3 million to the construction of the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center, providing state-of-the-art facilities for future athletes.

His professional career spanned 19 seasons in the NBA, earning ten All-Star selections and ranking ninth in all-time scoring with 28,289 points. Anthony also secured three Olympic gold medals with Team USA, becoming the first U.S. men’s basketball player to achieve this feat.

In April 2025, Anthony was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of the game’s greats. “Basketball has given me everything,” he stated. “To be recognized among the game’s all-time greats is beyond anything I dreamed of.”

As the ceremony concluded, Anthony left the graduates with a final piece of advice: “Go Orange!” His words resonated with the audience, encapsulating the spirit of perseverance and community that defines Syracuse University.
