CBS To Develop First Black Soap Opera In Over Three Decades

CBS is set to break new ground in daytime television with the development of a soap opera centered around a wealthy Black family, marking a significant milestone in the genre’s history.

Titled “The Gates,” the series will delve into the lives of a prosperous Black family residing in an exclusive gated community, promising to offer viewers a fresh and compelling perspective on daytime drama.

Renowned Emmy-winning writer Michele Val Jean, celebrated for her work on “The Bold & the Beautiful,” has been tapped as the show’s creator and showrunner. With an impressive portfolio of over 2,000 episodes in daytime television, Val Jean’s expertise ensures a captivating narrative that resonates with audiences.

In collaboration with CBS Studios, the NAACP, and P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble, “The Gates” aims to celebrate and elevate Black culture, placing it at the forefront of the storytelling. Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television.

“‘The Gates’ will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective,” Ducksworth stated. “With multidimensional characters, juicy storylines, and Black culture front and center, ‘The Gates’ will have impactful representation.”

The significance of this venture extends beyond entertainment, symbolizing a step towards greater diversity and inclusion in television programming. Ducksworth acknowledged the pivotal roles of CBS, P&G Studios, and the NAACP in championing this initiative, highlighting their commitment to amplifying Black voices in the industry.
