Coco Gauff has been named as Team USA’s female flag bearer for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This honor comes after Gauff had to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to testing positive for COVID-19. She is the first tennis player and the youngest athlete to hold this esteemed position.
An Honor for Coco Gauff
“We are proud to announce Coco Gauff has been selected to join LeBron James as the flag bearers for Team USA,” said Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic Committee. “Being nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about Coco’s approach to her sport and her role in Team USA. I’m thrilled for her to start her Olympic journey in Paris and, with LeBron, to inspire fans worldwide.”
Gauff learned the news in an emotional moment shared by Team USA. A social media video shows the 20-year-old learning of the surprise from her teammate Chris Eubanks, who nominated her for the honor. “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage.”
Reactions and Excitement
Eubanks, a fellow tennis star, expressed his pride in Gauff. “I’m incredibly proud of Coco – I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, how great she is as a person,” he said. “There is no one more deserving of this honor, and I’m excited to see her lead our U.S. delegation in the Opening Ceremony.”
Gauff, who is excited to meet LeBron James in person, shared her surprise and joy. “I was completely shocked. It never crossed my mind,” Gauff said. “It means a lot that so many incredible people think I’m worthy of this honor.”
James, who will be part of Team USA for the fourth time, expressed his pride as well. “It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said. “Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
The Opening Ceremony will be presented live on NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo on Friday, July 26, at 7:30 PM local time in Paris (1:30 PM ET).
