The Broadway-bound ‘The Wiz’ revival has gotten two new producers. Rapper, Common and hip-hop legend, MC Lyte are now confirmed to join the production of the play, according to Deadline.
The Wiz’s New Team Members
“I am so blessed to be part of this production of The Wiz,” Common shared. “Theatre has always affected me in a way that reaches my soul and spirit, in some measure because I didn’t realize as a kid that I could dream big enough to be part of it.”
The musical will launch with a national tour. It will kick off in Baltimore on September 23. It will hit Broadway in the spring and will reach Broadway in the Spring. Dates for the Broadway stop have not yet been announced.
The Grammy-winning rapper continued, “This is a true dream come true as one of my favorite movies growing up was The Wiz. My only hope is that this production can inspire someone else to chase their dreams and create their art.”
Lyte shared her own sentiments about joining the production team for the program in a statement.
“It is my greatest pleasure to have the opportunity to serve as an investor in this historic production of The Wiz,” she shared. Having grown up watching all of the Broadway musicals in the ’70s and ’80s, The Wiz has always been a favorite of mine. Now, as a co-producer, I’m honored to be able to partner behind the scenes and with communities nationwide to help make this production an artistic and memorable treasure for future generations.”
The two hip-hop stars are not the only celebs to join the team. Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker were recently announced as producers for the show.
The cast of the production will include some top names. Wayne Brady will play the Wiz in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Alan Mingo Jr. will star in the role for the remainder of the dates.
