Singer/songwriter PJ Morton started off as Maroon 5’s keyboardist and has become a successful solo artist in his own right.
PJ Morton grew up in church, but distanced himself from as he embarked on a career in pop and R&B. The singer got his big-break when he became the mega pop-group Maroon 5’s keyboardist. Although it started out as a tour-only job, Morton quickly became an official band member in 2012 and has appeared on three of Maroon 5’s platinum-plus-selling albums — 2012’s “Overexposed,” 2014’s “V” and 2017’s “Red Pill Blues.”
His solo career took off after he signed a deal with Young Money Entertainment and released his debut album “New Orleans” in 2013. Morton is a Grammy winning artist. He has son awards for best traditional R&B performance in 2019 (for his cover of the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love”) and best R&B song in 2020 (for his duet with JoJo, “Say So.).
He returned back to his roots, the church, as back in August he released a “Gospel According to PJ” which featured some gospel legends including Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams and the Clark Sisters, as well as other talents. Growing up in New Orleans as the son of two pastors — Bishop Paul S. Morton and Dr. Debra Brown Morton, the singer is immersed in gospel music and church.
