Congratulations are in order for Da Brat and her wife Jesseca Harris-Dupart. The couple revealed that they are expecting their first child together as the rapper showed off her growing baby bump.
In an interview with People, she opened up about her pregnancy journey. “It’s been quite a journey,” she said. “There’s a lot of stuff we learned about women over the age of 40.”
She went on to talk about how the journey started for her and wife after they got married last February. “It started as a joke, we were like, ‘We’re extending our family!’, she said in reference to her collaboration with Jesseca.
“But then we got a huge response. It was like, ‘Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!’” Da Brat’s wife has three children from another relationship, and children were not a part of the rapper’s plan.
“I never thought I was going to have kids,” the rapper said. “I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”
After meeting her wife, her perspective about children shifted. “I started looking at life so differently. I was like, I want a little me with you. Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally.”
Da Brat decided to carry their child after Harris-Dupart suffered some complications during an egg retrieval procedure. Da Brat opened up about suffering a miscarriage but was lucky to have a few eggs left from the retrieval.
“I had never been so excited about something that I didn’t even know I wanted,” Brat said. “I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me.” She added, “Luckily, we still had quite a few of her eggs left.”
“It’s just a blessing. I’m excited! “I don’t have any cravings or nausea, but I’m always sleepy. It’s crazy!”
