Long before surpassing 15 million YouTube views, Bahamian-born artist Iris Stryx faced repeated rejection from vocal teachers who questioned whether she had the voice needed to become a professional singer.
Her passion for musical theatre began in childhood after seeing The Sound of Music in New York City with her father, an experience that showed her the transformative power of live performance. Already trained in acting, dance and piano, Stryx had developed many of the skills required of a performer, but singing remained her greatest challenge. Her mother encouraged her to focus on her strengths, while her father urged her to learn from the best, advice that ultimately pushed her to pursue serious vocal training.
Stryx sought out respected vocal teachers in New York and California, but many quickly lost interest after hearing her sing. Although they recognized her appearance, experience and potential as a performer, they were unwilling to invest in developing her voice.
Her breakthrough came after she returned to South Florida and met Conchita De Antuñano, a Juilliard-trained former opera singer from Mexico. Unlike the other teachers, Conchita recognized the potential in Stryx’s voice and agreed to train her.
Their work together required years of discipline and patience as Stryx developed her range, control, diction, and confidence. Performing demanding musical-theatre songs eventually gave Stryx the confidence to recognize how much her voice had grown.

Conchita became more than a vocal teacher; she became a mentor who helped Stryx confront the fears and insecurities that had followed her throughout her artistic journey. Before Conchita’s death, Stryx was able to send her an unfinished recording, giving her mentor a glimpse of the singer she had always believed she could become.
Their relationship also helped Stryx understand the conflict between her fear of disappointing others and her desire to pursue her true purpose. Her transition from hip-hop to singing became an important part of that personal transformation. Rapping had allowed her to express herself while protecting her vulnerability, but singing forced her to confront that vulnerability and become more comfortable with who she was.
Today, Stryx’s journey has taken her far beyond the rejection she once experienced. Her music has attracted more than 15 million YouTube views, while her single Enchanting reached No. 1 on Jamaica’s YouTube chart and remained among the top two for seven weeks. Her sound blends Afrobeats, dancehall, R&B and pop while maintaining a strong connection to her Bahamian identity.
Her forthcoming album represents the culmination of years of training, persistence, and personal growth. More importantly, her success shows that her greatest achievement isn’t measured by streaming numbers or chart positions, but by the transformation of a voice others once dismissed into the defining instrument of an artist who refused to give up on her dream.
