Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly has opened the door for a new conversation about sexual assault, and the singer’s accusers have a lot to say.
Accuser Lisa Vanallen and her daughter, Akeyla, made a special appearance on Jada Pinkett-Smith’s famed Red Table Talk Facebook series to discuss the revelations that came to light after the release of Kelz’ shocking Lifetime docu-series.
Akeyla joined the show after Jada, Willow, and Adrienne introduced her mother. She almost immediately broke into tears as she opened up about her feelings having to watch Surviving R. Kelly and the things she learned about her mother. Vanallen interjected to let the audience know they watched the series together.
When asked how she’s dealing with the docu-series, Akeyla wasn’t shy about her response.
“People are really judgmental nowadays. When you hear someone’s story, you don’t know. Anyone could be going through anything,” Akeyla said with tears streaming down her face.
She went on to say, “It will make you realize why they act the way they act, and why they have anger issues. I used to always question that about my mom, like, ‘Why are you so over protective?’”
She continued, “I understand now. It’s scary out there. People are crazy,” she continued.
Willow jumped in the conversation to ask, “Has anyone come up to you at school saying anything about this?”
Sadly, Akeyla said, “Yes.”
“On social media, yeah. Someone DM’d me today and said, ‘Not to be rude, but does R. Kelly send you guys money?’”
