The world of arts and culture is mourning the loss of Vivian Ayers Allen, the celebrated poet, playwright, and cultural activist, who passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 102.
Best known as the mother of legendary actresses Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad, Ayers Allen built an extraordinary legacy in her own right, leaving an indelible mark on literature, education, and cultural preservation.
Born on July 29, 1923, in Chester, South Carolina, Ayers Allen grew up immersed in education and the arts, studying Latin, French, and piano at the historic Brainerd Institute. She went on to become a trailblazing voice in American poetry, with her 1952 collection Spice of Dawns earning a Pulitzer Prize nomination the following year.
Her scholarly interests extended far beyond poetry. Ayers Allen was deeply engaged in the study of classical Greek and Mesoamerican cultures, and her creative work included plays, curated exhibitions, and collaborations with visual artists. Among her most notable works was HAWK, a multidisciplinary piece created with acclaimed artist John Biggers.
