Debbie Allen Honored With Her Own Barbie

Debbie Allen is among a list of trailblazing women who have their own barbie doll.

The Fame actress, who’s character Lydia Grant, once said, “Remember my name!” will now ring true for the multi-hyphenate. Mattel’s latest doll for their Barbie Signature Tribute Collection honors Debbie Allen for her achievements and for being an inspiration to children.

In an statement, the Emmy award winner wrote, “As a little girl growing up in Houston, Texas, I never imagined this moment. 💖 To now see a Barbie that reflects my journey, my joy, and my dreams. May every child see themselves and know they can be anything.”

Allen’s contribution to the entertainment industry spans 45 years. She’s starred in, choreographed and directed some of America’s most beloved films, shows and plays including West Side Story, Fame, Sweet Charity, and A Different World.

In 2001, Allen opened the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, California. The nonprofit school offers a comprehensive dance curriculum for students ranging in age from 4 to 18, regardless of financial status.

The Houston native has racked up multiple accolades including a Tony nomination, Academy awards and Emmy awards. Allen received an honorary doctorate from the North Carolina School of the Arts — where she had originally been rejected. She also earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Women in Radio and Television
