Delroy Lindo received his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Sinners. Interestingly, his son Damiri shared with him the news of the nomination.

In an interview with E! News,  Lindo recalled the moment of being nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

I was in bed,” he recalled. “My phone rang. It was my son. I picked it up and said, ‘Hey man,’ and he said, ‘Dad, dad, you got it. You got that s–t.’”

Lindo said that Damiri could not contain his excitement. He also shared how it was a full-circle moment for his family.

His Son Damiri Called Him From Europe

“It means the world because he’s seen it all,” Lindo said. “He’s seen it away from the red carpet. From both sides of it. So, along with my wife, they have the internal and the external perspective on this journey. It felt completely right on to receive this news from my son.”

In total, Sinners earned 16 nominations, setting the record for most nods in the history of the Academy Awards

“It’s just incredibly joyful and affirming,”  Linddo explained. “Affirming that audiences inside and outside of the industry have responded to this work so fully. And the fact that the work has touched people, I believe, in the depth of their humanity.”

“I don’t have the words to explain how gratifying and affirming that feels,” he went on. “It’s extraordinary,” he added.

Lindo Felt Snubbed By The Academy In The Past

Speaking with Entertainment News in March, Lindo spoke about being snubbed for nominations in the past. He recalled a conversation he had with Spike Lee about the lack of nods for Da 5 Bloods in 2021.

Lindo said, “he had just gotten off a plane, and he called me. Said, ‘Man, I just heard.’ We were commiserating,” Lindo said. “Where we ended up was agreeing, no matter what, one must keep working. What am I going to do? Take my marbles and go home and get in the fetal position? No, I’m not going to do that.”
