A Denver man died in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday (June 25), making him the most recent American to pass away in the Caribbean country.
Colorado resident Khalid Adkins became ill after arriving in the Dominican Republic with his daughter last week. Denver’s FOX 31 News first reported on Adkins illness after he was removed from a plane to return home for medical care this past Sunday (June 23).
FOX reports Adkins’ sister-in-law “was dripping with sweat and vomited in the plane’s bathroom” before he was removed from his flight.
Doctors told the family that the father of two, who was being hospitalized in Santo Domingo, had failing kidneys and his breathing was “really bad.” They were then told he could continue dialysis in the Dominican or return home via air ambulance for treatment. Adkins’ family was quoted $20,000 to bring him home. While the family was able to raise the money via GoFundMe, Adkins passed away before arrangements to return could be made.
Adkins’ family will be flying his body home for medical examination and answers for his young adult daughters, ages 20 and 24. He raised the girls on his own since they were 7 years old.
According to FOX, “Dominican government officials have said the number of deaths is not unusual and that they are not related.”
