Doechii is back with her first single since her viral hit, “Anxiety.” This time, she tapped TDE labelmate, SZA, to be a part of the new single, “girl, get up.”
The surprise release was gifted to fans on Dec 30, offering words of empowerment going into the new year. “F– a limitation, leave me, girl, get up/Somеhow, I know that I’ll have everything that’s minе,” SZA sings in the chorus. Doechii comes out swinging with razor sharp verses seemingly addressing critics of her rapid success.
She has been accused over the years of being an ‘industry plant’. The phrase is pejorative term for a musician who seems to become famous quickly, appearing self-made, but is secretly backed by major record labels.
“All that industry plant shit wack / I see it in the blogs, I see you in the chats / ‘You sucked every rap n*gga dick from the back’ / But what’s the agenda when the ‘it’ girl Black? / Y’all can’t fathom that I worked this hard / And y’all can’t fathom that I earned this chart,” she spits in a defiant second verse.
Produced by Jay Versace, “girl, get up.,” samples the Neptunes’ drums from Birdman and Clipse’s “What Happened To That Boy?” According to a press release, this is the final song in Doechii’s Swamp Sessions series.
The video, directed by James Mackel — features striking imagery of Doechii on a yacht and stadium rooftop. The visuals paired with the song’s message, showcase Doechii’s unapologetic attitude towards critics who’ve downplayed her success.
“Girl, Get Up” is the second collaboration between Doechii and SZA, who previously linked up on “Persuasive (Remix)” from the former’s 2022 EP she / her / black bitch.
