Larry Hoover had one of his prison sentences commuted by President Trump.
According to reports, Hoover was convicted of two separate crimes and was set to spend the rest of his life in jail; however, Trump ended up getting rid of one of the convictions. Hoover, 74, was commuted from his federal life sentence for “operating a criminal enterprise.” When he was convicted of this crime, he was sent to a federal supermax facility in Colorado, while he was already serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in 1973 in Chicago.
Hoover will no longer have to serve time in Colorado, but he will have to carry out the rest of his sentence for the murder conviction in Chicago. The former drug kingpin’s attorney, Justin Moore, wrote on X and said, “After nearly 30 years in federal solitary and over 50 years behind bars, Larry Hoover has been granted executive clemency by President Trump.”
He continued, “His federal life sentence is over. Justice, mercy, and redemption prevailed. The fight continues, but today, we celebrate. This was all faith, legal precision, and relentless determination. Six life sentences. Beneath the Rocky Mountains. Gone. Just like that.”
Moore also added that he personally spoke with then-President Biden about commuting Hoover’s sentence, but he refused and said that Trump showed courage in doing so. “For those wondering, I had a direct, 1on1 convo with Joe Biden about commuting Larry’s sentence,” he shared on X.. “He decided not to, citing push back from officials in Illinois, even though it was expressed that Larry should’ve been released. To Trump’s credit, he did what others were afraid to do.”
Once the news broke, the hip-hop community was excited about it, especially Kanye West, who has been an advocate for getting Larry Hoover out of jail. “WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR OUR DEVOTED ENDURING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP FOR FREEING LARRY HOOVER,” he wrote on his X account.
