Legendary rapper, Dr. Dre has a few choice words for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
His lawyer sent a cease-and-desist letter to the representative this week. She used his song, Still D.R.E, as background music to a video celebrating Kevin McCarthy’s House speaker win.
In the almost two-minute clip, Greene walks through the halls of Congress. The end of the video displays a phone call between Greene and someone saved in her phone as “DT.” This is presumably a reference to former president Donald Trump. The video ended with a selfie of Greene and McCarthy after the victorious 15th round of voting.
In a statement, Dr. Dre states “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one.”
The letter from Dre’s attorney, Howard King, demanded that she immediately cease and desist from using his music. King stated in the letter that the musician “has not, and will never, grant you permission to broadcast or disseminate any of his music.” It also added, “you are wrongfully exploiting his work through the various social media outlets to promote your divisive and hateful political agenda.”
Dr. Dre’s team did not stop there. They reached out to Twitter which resulted in the video being taken down. Subsequently, Greene reported that she was locked out of her Twitter account.
A spokesperson for Greene sent a response from the Congress member to Dr. Dre. It read: “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”
Greene’s extremist politics includes racist, sexist and homophobic rhetoric. She has also promoted the far-right and baseless conspiracy theory QAnon. In February 2022 she spoke at a white nationalist event.
